Q
What motivated you to join the Ejay team?
A
I remember experimenting with one of the
Ejay titles back in 1999. The ease with
which I was able to create a track from
base units really impressed me. I was then
offered the opportunity to work on the
brand, which currently covers five products:
Virtual Music Studio, Dance 7, Hip Hop 6,
Techno 5 and R&B. I saw how much the
product had moved on since 1999 whilst
still retaining its simplicity.
I think the opportunity to develop the
brand over the next year, moving into new
formats and genres, is very appealing. This
was all compounded by the fact that I am
myself a part-time DJ!
Q
What is currently Ejay’s top selling
product and what are your current routes
to market?
A
Dance Ejay has always been our biggest
selling line and the current Dance 7 is no
exception to this. It is all very dependent on
the market we are selling into. In the US,
for example, Hip Hop 6 is the big seller.
Current routes to market for our products
are: mass retailers, e-tailers and also via
specialist and independent audio shops.
Q
A brand such as Ejay is only as big as the
community supporting it. What is the
current state of the Ejay community?
A
Since the 1990s, Ejay has had a strong,
passionate following. In total five million
copies of Ejay products have been sold
worldwide. The large community that we
are still supporting is still active via our
forums at Ejay.com. We are hoping that
new releases and our future strategy will
introduce new people to the Ejay brand.
Q
Are there any new releases on the
immediate horizon?
A
We are about to release Virtual Music
Studio, a title that has been very
successful over the last 10 years under the
name of Helium. While it is comparable to
Media Player and iTunes, it has advanced
features that you won’t find on either of
those. This makes it ideal for the user with
a large MP3 collection or someone who
lacks the time to organise their collection
manually. We believe that a music manager
program of this standard will complement
both our current range and the strategic
direction of the Ejay brand.
Q
What are you looking forward to most
about the job over the next year?
A
I think the fact that we are taking a twopronged
approach to the brand. On PC, we
will be developing the Virtual Music Studio
2 platform which will allow us to continue
appealing to the DJ enthusiast. We are also
hoping to open up the PC product to more
genres of music.
At the same time, we are looking to
take the brand onto XBox 360, PS3, Wii,
PSP and DS. This will allow us to bring Ejay
into the living room in a simpler console
version. You only have to look at other
music creation games, such as Guitar Hero,
to see the appeal to wider audiences.
